Your First Himalayan Trek: What to Expect

Your first Himalayan trek is less about summiting peaks and more about learning your rhythm at altitude. Most moderate treks start around 2,500 metres and climb gradually - giving your body time to adapt if you walk steadily and hydrate well.

Start training six to eight weeks out: brisk walks with a loaded daypack, stair climbs, and light strength work for legs and core. You do not need to be an athlete - consistency matters more than intensity.

On trail, expect early starts, simple but hearty meals, and evenings around the campsite. Guides will set the pace - listen to them. Altitude headaches are common above 3,000 metres; communicate early and descend if symptoms persist.

Pack in layers: base thermals, fleece, windproof shell, and a warm jacket for evenings. Sun protection is essential even when it feels cold. We send a full checklist after booking - bring what is on the list and leave the rest at home.

The best first treks balance scenery with manageable daily distances. Valley of Flowers, Kuari Pass, and Kashmir Great Lakes are popular starting points for good reason.
